Bitcoin generates more academic interest year after year; the number of Google Scholar articles published mentioning bitcoin grew from 83 in 2009, to 424 in 2012, and 3580 in 2016. In February 2015, the number of merchants accepting bitcoin exceeded 100,000.

The third price hike was connected to the launch of a Bitcoin ETF in the United States.
